How To Start A Travel Blog: Simple Steps

If you are reading this, there is no doubt that you know what a travel blog is. The point is that most people probably haven’t thought about how it is possible to start a travel blog and what you actually need to do. It really isn’t as hard as you may think and with my short guide, you should know everything that you need to know about how to start a travel blog and how to get started.

Choose a name

The first step is to find a name for your travel blog and this to me is the hardest part of how to start a travel blog. Obviously it is important to have a catchy name, but you want a name that lasts. Do you remember making an email address at a very young age and making a ridiculous name? This can be embarrassing when you tell people this email address and this is something similar that you want to avoid when making a blog.

Your blog name should represent your brand, but should also be able to grow with you and your travels. For example, don’t want to start a blog that is called something like “the broke traveler” and then expect to gain sponsorship from luxury hotels in the future. It just doesn’t make sense, so you need something that can evolve a little too.

Hosting your website

This is a simple process because there are a number of websites that will allow you to host for a very small amount each month. The cost is similar to buying a meal from McDonalds and more or less everyone can afford to do this. Having your own website makes you accountable and creates a brand name and identity for your blog. This also gives you room to customise your site as you wish. This also forms an integral part of your blog and your brand as a travel blogger.

Buying a domain name

This is something that I would highly recommend doing when discovering how to start a travel blog. The reason for this is that you are actually creating a brand name for yourself and not a “traveler.wordpress.com” account. You are making a professional move here and it doesn’t matter if you never make money from your blog, a domain is usually very cheap to buy. People are also much more likely to trust you and your brand when you have your own website.

Designing a website

We already talked about hosting a website and how this allows you to customise your own site. You can do this by hiring a designer, freelancer or company to design a website for you. You could also experiment with a little bit of coding yourself to make the website, which is also a great skill to learn and one great benefit of having a travel blog. If you are looking for a more professional look to your website you can always modify the design later. Check your needs first, but ensure everything is at least accessible and easy to read first.

Get blogging

The last step is of course to start writing about anything and everything you experience. Most of all enjoy your shiny new travel blog and keep writing!
