Getting an Online Degree While Traveling: Is it Really Possible?

Taking a year off to travel the world is a dream for many, while a college education is an even greater one. A few years ago, it was inconceivable to think that one could do both things at the same time. Luckily, technology has now made it possible for you to achieve them – visit Paris or China and still earn your degree.

Many universities and colleges are now offering online degrees that you can combine with your love for travel. And many students are finding it even easier to complete their location-independent studies without having to show up at a physical class setting. However, it does take some organization and motivation, and here are a few tips that will help you earn better grades as you lounge on the beach.

Select the Right Program

The first thing you should do is choose a program that is compatible with your life. For example, if you love traveling, choose a program that allows you to use your new skills in a range of cultures. In such a case, a program should allow you to work from anywhere in the world since you do not know where you might end up next.

In addition, you should select an online degree program on a subject you are passionate about. Like many other things in life, online programs vary and you can choose to study for an accredited online MBA degree or a degree in a non-traditional field such as holistic therapy for instance. The one you choose should be challenging so that you can get the most out of your travel/learning experience.

Be Connected

You will need to have a reliably fast Internet connection if you want to earn your online degree while abroad. And if you’re going for a course that usually demands access to vast numbers of documents, such as online MBA programs, the importance of a good connection is capital. The connection is important for ensuring that you can see your classes, download course information, contact instructors, interact with classmates, and submit homework and projects.

Check Time Zone Compatibility

If you are already out of the country, consider your time zone relative to the time-zone of your online degree program. Issues surrounding time zones are likely to affect your class sessions, peer project meetings and support hours.

Managing time zone differences extends to personal effectiveness. It is important that you understand your own limitations. Sometimes, live online sessions may fall in the middle of the night in your time zone. Maybe you will be required to be up at four in the morning for a class. It is not impossible, but you will lose some beauty sleep.

Expand Your Horizons

Although you are pursuing an online degree you should still immerse yourself in the local culture and learn as much as you can about your surroundings, and tie this to your degree program. However, take it slow whenever you have a major assessment coming.

With a little planning, it is possible to study and travel the world at the same time.
