6 Reasons to Go Backpacking in the Miami Area

Backpacking is not just an excuse to get up on a mountain trail and enjoy nature – although you can certainly avail yourself of this and make a wonderful afternoon out of it. Backpacking is also the world-recognized, best way to travel on the cheap to see the world. One such place that you really should explore is Miami. Here is why.

1. The Beach

If there’s one place you should spend some time while in Miami, it is definitely the beach. Whether you want to soak in the sun and people watch, or because you want to splash in the azure water, the beaches in Miami are a can’t-miss attraction. What’s more, there are plenty of them to choose from so you can find one that suits your mood: laid back and contemplative, or ready to party.

2. The Cuisine

Miami has flavors all its own. With influences from many cultures, including Mexican, Caribbean, and Cuban, the city’s food scene will have your mouth watering with each whiff of grilled meat. What makes it even better is that street food is both delicious and inexpensive – meaning it fits your backpacking travel style to a tee.

3. The Everglades

The alligator-filled wetlands just outside Miami are one of the unique ecological wonders you need to experience. They’re also the perfect place to retreat to when the heat and bustle of the city becomes overwhelming. And since many Miami hotels and hostels offer tours to the Everglades, there is no reason not to go.

4. The Parties

The city is famous for its unbeatable nightlife. Consult the Miami guide on Gogobot.com for details on some of the hottest party spots in the country. Since you’re backpacking, you probably won’t bring attire suited for the city’s swankiest hangouts, but there are plenty of casual options where you can dance until the sun comes up.

5. The Culture

Miami is home to a number of excellent sports teams and venues; everything from professional basketball and football, to baseball and hockey.  Miami is also famous for its Art Deco – check out the geometric, minimalist buildings throughout the city (possibly when you’re on your way to a party).

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is also worth your time; you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss it. It’s an amazing and elegant experience that will make you think you’ve left Miami and gone to Europe.

6.  The Pub and Club Crawls

After all that culture you’re bound to be thirsty. Fortunately, the hostels almost all organize pub/club crawls. This is an excellent way to get out without spending too much money. Most will cost you between 10 and 15 dollars, you’ll get into several places for free, travel will be covered, and then of course, there’s generally some free drinks involved as well.

Are you ready to feel the heat in one of Florida’s most happening cities? For independent spirits with wanderlust, backpacking around Miami is a fun, exciting, and inexpensive way to explore the Magic City.
