You can drop into this city for just a few days or choose to book one of the many Budapest Hungary holidays that different companies now offer.

Some people enjoy having a pre-booked itinerary so that you know you can see the best of the city in the time you have to spend there. Others prefer to wing it and see where the mood takes them once they’ve got to their destination.

While in Budapest, here are some things you might not want to miss out on:

  • Spas are a big thing in Budapest, and one of the oldest that is still in operation is the Szechnenyi Bath and Spa, which was known as Artesian Bath when it opened in 1881. Through the years it’s undergone various facelifts and was renamed the Szechenyi Bath and Spa in 1913. It underwent a complete restoration in 1999, being completely modernised in the process while maintaining all its former glory. The thermal water comes from the second St Stephan’s Well. The spa is open daily, and even the outdoor bathing areas are popular in winter.
  • While the spa is somewhere to indulge and relax, the next must-see attraction is quite the opposite. The House of Terror at Andrássy út 60 is a museum with exhibits around the fascist and communist dictator regimes in twentieth century Hungary. The House of Terror acts as a memorial to all victims of those regimes, many of whom were actually tortured and killed in the building that now houses the museum.
  • Budapest is a beautiful city to walk around, with amazing architecture almost everywhere you look. To get a great panorama of the city make your way to the Fisherman’s Bastion in the Castle District. Its name comes from the fact that the medieval ramparts rise up over the Fishermen’s Town suburb and there used to be a fish market behind the ramparts.

Of course, these are just a few things that you can visit or spend time in while in Budapest, a city that teems with history and culture. Do your research before you go to make sure you see your own personal highlights of this fascinating city.
