Cornwall is one of those special corners of the UK that often gets overlooked for the larger cities, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t every bit as special as places like London, Manchester or the like. I love to head there whenever I get the chance and there are simply many reasons for this. For me the nature, beaches, history and great food are just a few of these reasons. I decided to write a bit more about one of my favourite places with the help of holiday cottage specialists Blue Chip Holidays, I hope you enjoy reading more about it!
Porthmeor Beach (St. Ives)
The town of St. Ives is extremely popular with swimmers and surfers and is a proud holder, along with seven other beaches in Cornwall, of the Blue Flag Award. This is given to the best beaches in the world for water quality, safety and their eco responsibility. Porthmeor Beach is one of the best beaches you are going to find in any part of the UK and this half mile stretch of sand is popular for swimming and relaxing. This beach combines all of the best elements of beach life, from swimming, to great restaurants, bars, cafes and beautiful architecture that is very unique.
Tintagel Castle
For many years this somewhat mysterious castle has been linked to the legends of King Arthur that we all grew up reading about and it has been a popular destination for tourists since the 19th century. The castle itself dates back to the 13th century, but buildings and objects found on the site of the castle seem to indicate construction or occupation during the late Roman period. There are a number of things to see, such as the castles grounds and ruins, as well as beautiful King Arthur statue that you can see in the picture above. It is amazing to see the views from this clifftop castle too, which is something that you will never forget, whilst thinking of all the amazing legends that may or may not have occurred here!
Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm
The Cornish are well known for their love of ales and ciders that are some of the most unique and delicious in the world. If you are in Cornwall you need to visit Healey’s and it has been producing great wines, ciders and other things for 30 years. You can explore the factory and see exactly how some of the best cider in the world is produced. There is nothing better than climbing the huge vats of cider to see exactly how things are produced from the most unique and amazing vantage point that you could possibly imagine. You should definitely head to the restaurant too, to enjoy some of Cornwall’s finest fare. I highly recommend trying the cider of course, but get yourself some jam and scones covered in cream, you won’t forget it.
Learn to surf
No trip to Cornwall would be complete without learning how to surf, especially with the amazing beaches and great surf that you can enjoy. People come from all around the world to surf in Cornwall, even though you probably wouldn’t think it was possible to surf anywhere in Britain! If you are just starting out you can head to Newquay to the Quicksilver Surf School to learn more of the basics and get your technique up to scratch to wide those great big waves. Surfing is a truly fun experience and if you are in Cornwall you should definitely give it a go. Trust me, you will not regret it. If that’s not your thing you can kayak, paddle board or just swim too!
